In spalted maple, nature shows us that she's the consummate artist.
The Vernon Bed, featuring a spalted maple headboard.
From wooden bowls to solid body guitars to fine furniture, spalted maple is prized for its exotic look. Every slab of spalted maple is unique, featuring areas of light and dark colorations. Thin, dark "zone" lines wend their way through the wood as if drawn by a map maker.
Spalting in maple (and other woods) is caused by fungi at the end of the wood's life cycle. It requires specific conditions and timing. For this reason, spalted maple of furniture grade quality is rare and more costly than regular maple. You're rewarded by owning a remarkable, one-of-a-kind heirloom.
